New Extraordinary Weeks and
Requested Old Favorites at Hidden Creek Ranch!
For our 2004 season we again have put together a very special
program for all our adult only weeks during the month of May, the
first part of June and September. You will find old favorites as
well as exciting new “magic”. Again we offer our full
summer program in addition to the special themes for each week to
allow a more in-depth exploration of the many aspects that our ranch,
its surrounding area and the many talents our people have to offer.
Each week will have special times dedicated to a unique theme which
will be in the form of amazing workshops, breathtaking explorations
and excellent hands on experiences. Read through the following menu
of Special Weeks to whet your appetite. We believe that there is
something for everyone and can’t wait to share these wonderful
weeks with you.
Please note that most of our special
week programs are offered simultaneously and in addition to our
normal program. This will allow you the option of participating
both in the special and normal programs within the same week. Weeks
that are marked with a “Ø” are not offered in
conjunction with our regular program and our usual activities are
not available during those weeks.
Ø Dirty
Dudes Week – April 24th through May 1st
Our Dirty Dudes Week is a tradition for returning adult
guests and offers a “behind the scenes” look at the
beginning of our season. You can be a part of our Ranch Family!
Eat, play and get “dirty” alongside the Ranch staff.
During this week you can help clean trails, set-up Tipis, the Barbecue
and Campfire Meadows, outdoor games and furniture and still enjoy
trail riding and activities of your choice (you know our program!).
Imagine the fun you will have when “working” with us
and then putting together your very own program for the play days.
Usually this week turns into one big homecoming party! First we
work you “hard” and then you can choose what you wish
to demand from us. This week will be based on a seven-day week,
and includes three full “Dirty Dudes Days” and three
full “Play Days” ending with our seven-course candle
light dinner. Since you are helping us for three days, the week
is offered at half price and the cost is $1115.00 per person double
occupancy or $1285.00 for single occupancy. This is your chance
to experience what it takes to be a “Dude Rancher”!
Food Class & Wine Education
Week - May 2nd through May 8th
Learn about food and wine, Hidden Creek Ranch style. Through
demonstration and discussion, (with plenty of time for tasting!)
our executive chef, Rose Ludwig, will lead you on a culinary journey
through the gourmet menus for which we have become so well known.
Discover what it takes to reproduce our wonderful soups, appetizers,
salads, entrees and desserts in your own kitchen, while enjoying
all that Hidden Creek Ranch has to offer. Also included is a wine
tasting seminar led by Idaho Wine Merchants. The grand finale of
the week, the seven-course candlelight dinner, will focus on one
specific winery. A representative of the winery will discuss each
wine served that has been matched to the accompanying course. Imagine
how you can impress your friends and family with descriptions of
the most delicious meals that will be the center of attention of
your event!
Rose Ludwig graduated from culinary school, Johnson and
Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she was trained
in classical French cooking techniques. After graduating from school
and working for a year as a culinary teaching assistant, Rose moved
to California where she held a variety of jobs including cooking
at a winery in San Jose, helping to open a small but successful
café in Berkeley and cooking at Fog City Diner in San Francisco.
Later Rose worked for Lettuce Entertain You in the Chicago area
and for Border Grill (The Too Hot Tamales restaurant) in the Los
Angeles area as an Executive Chef.
Hands-on Horsemanship Week
– May 9th through May 15th
With a special focus on equestrian ground skills, this
week will offer an enlightening study in interpersonal human equine
relations and the conscious use of self through interaction with
horses. As we explore the intricacies of equine communication, commonly
referred to as “Horse Whispering”, you will begin to
learn the dance, speak the same body language and experience the
euphoria and satisfaction of connection with another species. By
learning how to move quietly within a large herd of horses and methods
of approaching individual horses, we will examine personal safety
considerations. We will practice hands-on ground skills such as
haltering, leading and tying as well as study goals for grooming
and hoof care, investigate saddle construction, fit and maintenance
and compare bridle/bit form with function. You will discover how
horses think and break through human uncertainty entering into more
assertive, clear body language skills. This newfound awareness of
the present moment and understanding of behaviors that enhance or
hinder will empower you to establish a relationship of calmness,
trust and cooperation based on mutual self-assurance. Through round
penning you will experiment with the delicacies of body language
by first asking the horse to leave your personal space and then
inviting the animal back wholeheartedly. When that horse decides
to partner up and wants to be with you - when out of everything
they could pay attention to, their focus is you - you will experience
the pure joy of being a horse's kindred spirit.
Magic Week - May 16th through
May 22nd
Have you ever dreamed of performing your own magic show
where spectators stare at you in fascination and awe? Would you
like to amaze and amuse your guests, both grown up and not quite
grown up yet and captivate your audience with mesmerizing hocus
pocus, having them beg you to do it once again? Imagine magic in
your own hands! Throughout this week you will learn from a real
magician how to put on your own 20 to 30 minute long magic show.
By the end of the week, the curtain will open for your very first
performance at Hidden Creek Ranch. You will leave with the understanding
of the principles of performing magic, will be expected to sign
the magicians’ oath and will be eligible to join the International
Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM). What better place to become a magician
than in the magical valley of Hidden Creek Ranch?
Dan and Eileen McCrady will introduce you to the basic
concepts of the Art of Magic through lectures, workshops and practice
sessions. Dan has been practicing the Art for more than 10 years
and is a "Wizard" in the International Brotherhood of
Magicians. Eileen has been his Magician's Assistant for that entire
time and has helped Dan develop his craft and advance the appreciation
of the Art. Together, they will help you get started on a journey
that may take you places you've yet to imagine!
Ø
Centered Riding? Week – May 23rd through May 29th
With what has now become a tradition, Hidden Creek Ranch
will host two Centered Riding? Weeks. The first one will run from
May 25th to May 31st and the second one from September 28th to October
4th. Both clinics are of interest to all levels of riders and will
be devoted to creating an in-depth understanding and experience
of the Basics of Centered Riding?. Our riding student guests will
be able to get very special attention, with at times on an almost
one-to-one basis of student and instructor. Through Centered Riding®
you can discover the joy of balanced, skilled and harmonious partnership
with your horse. Also called the “Tai Chi” of horseback
riding, it allows you to achieve goals through body and mind coordination
using classical knowledge, Western riding, Alexander Technique,
psychology of horse and rider, intuition and common sense.
These special weeks feature Centered Riding® Senior
Clinician Sally Haney, current President of Centered Riding, Inc.,
Level IV Centered Riding Instructor and NARHA Registered Instructor,
Clinician. She is also a graduate of the Alexander Foundation in
Philadelphia and a nationally certified instructor of the Alexander
Technique. Sally is a level II Reiki Practitioner and a Registered

at workshops, clinics and conference around the US and Europe, she
has worked with equestrians, athletes, voice students, and performing
artists. She has taught many Centered Riding® clinics here at
the Ranch and throughout the United States and Europe. As a compliment
to the Centered? way of approaching horseback riding you will also
have the opportunity to participate in meditation, yoga and Tai
Chi exercises. There are a variety of options in levels of participation
available, however they are all on a first come first served basis,
so call soon for more information.
Ø Vision Quest through
Earth-Heart – May 23rd through May 29th
We annually host a Vision Quest week through Earth-Heart
here at Hidden Creek Ranch. The traditional Vision Quest is a practice
evolved by indigenous societies worldwide. The people of these societies
understood that for their culture to remain vital, each member must
breathe inspiration from their own inner vision. The Quest opened
the participants’ hearts to this inner “knowing”
and helped them apply it in everyday life. The wilderness Vision
Quest at Hidden Creek Ranch is a seven-day program that includes
a four-day quest.
Malcolm Ringwalt is the founder of Earth-Heart and a long-time
student of Tom Brown. He has been an instructor at Tom's School
since the early eighties and is one of the original members of the
Coyote Thunder Medicine Society. Since 1991, Malcolm has co-facilitated
Vision Quests, Philosophy Skills Workshops, and Protector Training
Courses. We are working with Malcolm to make his teachings available
to our guests. Bookings for this very special week are made directly
through Earth-Heart. For more information please call Malcolm Ringwalt
at (310) 967-1336.
Outdoor Photography –
May 30th through June 5th
Hidden Creek Ranch will again host two Outdoor Photography
Weeks with workshops on nature photography each day throughout both
weeks. The first one will run from June 8th to June 14th and the
second one from September 7th to September 13th. The workshops take
place both indoors during informal classroom settings and outdoors
practicing hands-on photography in nature. Your pictures will be
developed in the middle of each week to allow the instructor to
provide constructive feedback and to custom tailor the remainder
of the week. You will learn the use of natural outdoor lighting,
a combination of outdoor environmental photography and outdoor portraiture
and you will also have individual help in understanding your own
personal equipment in order to utilize it to its fullest potential.
Bill Adams will instruct the photography workshop. Bill
has a photography degree from San Jose State University and especially
enjoys environmental marine underwater photography. He is the owner
of Northwest Images in Spokane, WA, which has been in business since
1982. The focus and concentration of his company is on outdoor and
environmental photography.
Summer Program - June 13th
through September 4th
From mid June through August – the kids are on vacation!
We offer a full Children’s Program for children ages three
to teens available throughout the day as well as during “adults
only” evening activities. Our children’s program runs
simultaneously yet separate from the adult program, allowing couples
and singles to take advantage of this very wonderful season while
still enjoying their privacy.
It is up to each parent how much time they want to spend
with their children and how much time the children want to spend
within the Children’s program (Most children love our program
so much that they beg their parents to join in too!) No matter how
much or little time you choose to spend together, you can trust
that your children are well taken care of and are having a wonderful
time. Our Children’s Program is centered around the different
age groups and attention spans and provides exploration and playful
learning. Through daily horseback riding lessons and trail rides,
your children will learn to feel relaxed and in control of their
horse. By the end of the week your child will have had a well-rounded
horseback riding experience and will have felt the empowering boost
in self-esteem associated with those accomplishments. Activities
like team initiative games increase your children’s abilities
to communicate, cooperate and solve problems together. On our ropes
course, we create a safe and trusting environment to empower your
children to step through their own boundaries and achieve what they
never imagined possible. Through creatively involving the kids with
Nature, horses and animals, we develop within the child the role
of caretaker for those around them as well as for the environment.
Our Children’s Program encourages awareness and development
of the senses, helping your children to intimately approach Nature,
adventure and the wonder of life.
Workshops - Outdoor Photography
– September 5th – September 11th
See description above under Workshops - Outdoor Photography
– May 30th through June 5th.
Hiking Week - September 12th
through September 18th
It is during autumn that the Ranch takes on an air of
tranquility as Indian Summer sets in. The cooler climate of autumn
is a wonderful time to hike our mountains and savor late summer’s
glorious days and changing colors. During this week we offer hikes
not only within our regular fitness program, but also during the
mornings and afternoons when you can explore more of our backcountry
on foot. Enjoy active days (at your own pace) while taking pleasure
in the breathtaking sights from our favorite walking trails. Join
us for an exciting week and discover the joy that only comes from
climbing to the top of a mountain during an all-day hike. Take a
refreshing swim in a pristine mountain lake during your lunch break
before you descend back down another scenic trail to complete your
day. Indulge your senses in Rose’s delicious gourmet dinner
before you retire for a restful night in your cabin. This is a week
where you live your life to its fullest and experience the simple
pleasures of every day as magnificent celebrations!
“Art Of Massage”
Week – September 19th through September 25th
Hippocrates said: “Above all else, know how to rub
well”. A statement largely ignored by the medical establishment,
it is the basis of good massage therapy. However, massage therapy
is not only good technique, it is also an art and an ability to
sense through touch. Like a sculptor molding a formless mass into
an expression of beauty, a massage artist kneads a mass of tension
and constriction into a sensation of beauty filled with flexibility,
peace and deep relaxation.
With every touch the massage therapist uses healing intention
through heightened awareness, created by training and infused with
giftedness. Come join Jacqueline McKay in a week of discovering
your ability to “rub well”. Jacqueline has had her own
business as a massage therapist since 1992 and has been a Registered
Massage Therapist since 1996.
You will learn basic terms and techniques used in Relaxation
and Deep Tissue Therapeutic Massage. We will also touch on the power
of essential oils and will mix our own blend of massage oil to use
during the class. The use of sound in helping to create a healing
and relaxing atmosphere will also be explored. Come enjoy this “hands
on training” in the beauty of Hidden Creek Ranch.
