SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Summer is a special time in the mountains of Montana. The
days are long and most often sunny. Temperatures are often in the 70's and low 80's.
Evening temperatures are usually in the 40's.
Summer is a time when families visit the ranch finding a
variety of activities that pleases almost everyone. Flyfishing, horseback riding, many
naturalist activities and a well organized children's program are offered daily. Lone
Mountain Ranch's delightful food, comfortable lodging and wide range of things to do
ensures our guests will have a very special vacation adventure!
Fly Fishing
Fly fishing in the Blue Ribbon Trout
Streams of Southwest Montana and in Yellowstone National Park is legendary. The Ranch is
also within a short distance from the Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone, Gibbon, and Firehole
rivers, all renowned for their excellent fishing.
Lone Mountain Ranch is endorsed by Orvis, this nation's
oldest and most prestigious manufacturer of flyfishing equipment. We have our own in-house
professional guides, rental equipment, and a retail shop featuring quality
Orvis
tackle. Visit our fishing report for detail information on the local fishing conditions
and hatch information.
There are many wonderful trip destinations for our fishing
enthusiasts. Individual fly fishing trips and clinics for beginners and experts are
available summer and winter to Ranch guests and to people not staying at the ranch. Lone
Mountain Ranch is unusual because it offers a very professional fly fishing program,
including wading and drift boat trips, as well as plenty of other activities for any
non-anglers in your group.
Horseback Riding
Horses are a way of life in Montana and Lone Mountain Ranch
offers a wonderful way to experience horses as a means of exploring the forests and
mountains in the area. We are justifiably proud of our well trained herd of horses and the
wranglers that lead our rides. Rides are intentionally limited to a few riders so you can
learn about the country from your informative wrangler. In addition to rides around the
Ranch and morning and afternoon rides, we also offer all-day rides exploring areas in and
around Yellowstone National Park.
Most of our horseback riding is at a walking and trotting
pace. If the terrain permits, and everyone on the ride feels comfortable, we may do some
loping. Please note that to ensure horse and rider safety in the mountainous terrain, we
enforce a rider weight limit of 230 pounds.
Kids love horses and the Lone Mountain Ranch is an ideal
place for young people to develop horse skills and self confidence while they acquire an
enhanced appreciation for nature. We start by teaching basic horsemanship skills and build
on those skills throughout the week. We offer rides for ages six and older. Kids may join
their parents for family-oriented rides or participate in all-kids rides.
We recognize that many of our guests rarely, if ever, ride a
horse. We know that the best way of making sure our guests have a pleasant experience on a
horse is to be sure they get started right. At the beginning of a guest's stay, we conduct
a "horse sense" clinic to explain and demonstrate how to ride and behave with a
horse. This is followed by a controlled ride in an arena where each riding guest is taught
the principles of Western horsemanship. Even our more
timid guests quickly learn enough to feel reasonably confident on the trail rides
following the clinic.
Naturalist Activities
We
believe that programs emphasizing the discovery of nature add a very
valuable and unique depth to a Lone Mountain Ranch vacation. Our naturalist
activities offer you many opportunities for varying degrees of physical
activity while expanding your knowledge of the Greater Yellowstone
Ecosystem.
Build on your understanding of nature through activities presented
by our guest naturalists. Wildlife viewing can be the perfect avenue for learning more
about this ecosystem. We offer Photo tours and workshops for those who would like to take
a part of the ranch home.
Sharpen your wilderness skills in an orienteering workshop or on the
self- guided nature trail.
Get to know the mountain wilderness with our friendly,
knowledgeable naturalist staff on one of the many guided nature hikes,
canoe trips, or tours of Yellowstone National Park.
Kids' Program
The
Lone Mountain Ranch Kids' Program boasts a highly capable staff and
an atmosphere where kids can have fun while learning about the bountiful
Montana environment. There are a wealth of diverse activities enjoyed
by the young people while at the Ranch.
At various times in the week, you could find the kids developing
self confidence on the climbing wall or confidence course, singing songs while roasting
s'mores by the campfire, refreshing themselves with a run down the Slip n' Slide,
canoeing, fishing, hiking or observing wildlife. Every thing from butterfly hikes to
snowball hikes and mountain crafts projects happen in one week!
Teens enjoy volleyball games, adventure hikes, nature discovery
hikes, llama hikes, horseback riding, map and compass instruction, a challenging
orienteering course, horse shoe pitching and ping pong.
Younger children's activities are planned to suit the abilities and
interests of various age levels. Activities may include; horseback or pony rides, nature
discovery hikes, llama walks, animal tracking and casting, gold panning, map and compass
classes and contests, volley ball, ping pong, horseshoe pitching, climbing on the climbing
wall, confidence course and playing games. The Kids' Yurt offers arts and crafts and a
play area.
Our Kids' program operates from mid-June until early
September. The objective of our Kids' program is for young people
to have fun while learning to appreciate nature and developing more
self confidence through planned activities and recreation. All youth
activity programs are adjusted weekly in response to the kids' ages,
abilities and interests. |
